What is the Cyber Resilience Pledge and why does it matter?

The UK Government’s Cyber Resilience Pledge encourages businesses to take greater responsibility for cyber security, both within their own organisations and across their supply chains.

Recent high-profile cyber attacks have demonstrated just how disruptive the consequences can be. The attack on Jaguar Land Rover in 2025 had an estimated £1.9 billion impact on the UK economy, affecting more than 5,000 organisations. While large businesses make the headlines, smaller businesses are also at risk, both from attacks on their own systems and disruption to the companies they depend on.

The pledge encourages business leaders to take a more proactive approach to managing these risks and improving cyber security across their supply chains. Whether or not you choose to sign, there are practical steps you can take to protect your business, including achieving Cyber Essentials certification.

Key facts about the Cyber Resilience Pledge

Voluntary commitment

Businesses can choose whether to sign, but doing so brings specific responsibilities and ongoing commitments.

Open to businesses of all sizes

The pledge is primarily designed for medium and large organisations, but smaller businesses can participate too.

Cyber Essentials matters

Cyber Essentials certification is separate from the pledge, but plays an important role in demonstrating cybersecurity standards to customers and suppliers..

You can take action without signing

Businesses can improve their cybersecurity, achieve Cyber Essentials and use relevant security tools without formally joining the pledge.

What does the Cyber Resilience Pledge involve?

Organisations signing the pledge commit to three main areas of action.

Cyber security isn’t just an IT issue. Business leaders need to understand the risks, take responsibility for managing them and ensure appropriate plans are in place.

This includes implementing the government’s Cyber Governance Code of Practice and undertaking board-level cybersecurity training.

The National Cyber Security Centre’s free Early Warning service alerts organisations to potential cyber security threats affecting their systems.

By registering, businesses can become aware of certain vulnerabilities and suspicious activity sooner, giving them an opportunity to investigate and respond.

Businesses are encouraged to check the Cyber Essentials certification status of their suppliers and take a risk-based approach to improving supply-chain security.

This includes using the IASME Cyber Essentials Supplier Check tool, identifying potential gaps and encouraging relevant suppliers to achieve certification.

Does your business need to sign the pledge?

Signing the Cyber Resilience Pledge is voluntary, and not every business will be ready to take on its full commitments. However, the principles behind it are relevant to organisations of all sizes.

One particularly important consideration is Cyber Essentials certification. As larger organisations strengthen their supply-chain security, they may increasingly expect suppliers to demonstrate that they meet recognised cyber security standards.

If an existing or potential customer asks whether your business holds Cyber Essentials certification, being able to say yes could make a real difference.

You don’t need to sign the pledge to work towards certification, review your suppliers or improve your cyber security arrangements.

Why nTrust has signed the Cyber Resilience Pledge

At nTrust, we believe that improving cyber security is a shared responsibility.

We’ve signed the government’s Cyber Resilience Pledge because we recognise the importance of strong cyber security governance, protecting our own business and encouraging better security practices across our supply chain.

As a Cyber Essentials certification provider, we already help businesses understand and meet recognised cyber security standards.

We’re also reviewing the Cyber Essentials status of our own suppliers and encouraging improvements where appropriate.
